The Three-Breath Pause

Sometimes all we need is a moment.

Not an hour away from our responsibilities. Not an elaborate ritual. Simply a moment to stop, become still, and return to ourselves.

One of the practices I return to is what I call the Three-Breath Pause.

Three conscious breaths.

Three intentions.

LET GO.
HERE NOW.
WHAT NEXT?

First Breath — LET GO

Become still wherever you are and find a comfortable position.

Take a slow, comfortable breath in, allowing the breath to deepen naturally.

Then exhale slowly.

As you exhale, bring your attention to the words:

LET GO.

Notice what you may be carrying—tension, anxiety, expectations, worries, unfinished tasks, old baggage.

You don’t have to solve any of it.

For this one breath, simply allow yourself to loosen your hold.

LET GO.

Return to your natural breathing for a moment.

Second Breath — HERE NOW

Take another slow, comfortable breath.

As you exhale, bring your attention to:

HERE NOW.

Bring yourself fully into this moment.

Not yesterday.

Not what must be done later.

Here.

Now.

Notice your body. Your breath. The sounds around you. The place where you are.

Allow yourself simply to be present.

Third Breath — WHAT NEXT?

Take your third conscious breath.

As you slowly exhale, ask:

WHAT NEXT?

This is where something interesting can happen.

What Next? is an open question.

Rather than immediately deciding what you should do next, allow yourself a moment of not knowing.

Listen.

Wonder.

What is calling for your attention?

What possibility is quietly presenting itself?

The answer may arrive immediately—or it may not. It may be something quite different from what you expected or wanted.

The invitation is simply to remain open and attentive to what emerges.

Three Breaths. One Pause.

The Three-Breath Pause is more than a break in the day.

It is a small practice of returning:

LET GO — release what you are carrying.

HERE NOW — return to the present.

WHAT NEXT? — open to possibility.

Sometimes there is time to linger with each breath.

Sometimes life allows only the briefest version:

Pause.
Breathe.
Let Go.
Here Now.
What Next?

Then return to your day and take the next step.
